What is an X-ray Machine?

An X-ray machine provides a controlled beam of radiation that is used in the formation of an image of the interior of the body. This beam is directed at the area to be tested. After the beam as passed through the body, it falls on a piece of film or a special plate on which it forms a kind of shadow. Different body tissues block or absorb the radiation in different ways. Dense tissues, such as bones, blocks most of the radiation and appear in form of white on the film. Soft tissues, such as muscles, block less radiation and appear darker on the film. Often, multiple images are taken from different angles, which allow a more complete view of the area. Images obtained during X-ray examinations can be viewed on a film or undergo a process which is referred to as “digitizing” so that they can be seen on the computer screen.

How do X-ray Machines Work?

The X-ray machine is essentially a camera. Instead of visible light, however, it uses X-rays to show the film.

X-rays are like light in that they are electromagnetic waves, but they are more energetic and can penetrate many materials in different degrees. When the X-rays hit the film, they expose them as light. As bones, fat, muscles, tumors and other masses absorb X-rays at different levels; the picture on the film allows you to see different structures within the body due to the different levels of the exposure on the film.

Where X-Ray Machines are Used

Below are examples of tests and procedures that use X-ray technology for the diagnosis or treatment of the disease:

Diagnostic
X-ray radiography: detect bone fractures, certain tumors, and other abnormal masses, pneumonia, certain types of wounds, calcification, foreign body, dental problems, etc.

Mammography: this is a radiograph of the breast that is used for the detection of cancer and diagnosis.

CT (Computed Tomography): this is a combination of traditional X-ray technology with computer processing so as to produce a series of cross-sectional images that can be combined at a later time to form a three-dimensional x-ray image. Computed tomography images are more detailed than standard radiographs and allow physicians to visualize body structures from different angles.

Other examinations that need the use of an X-ray machine include fluoroscopy and radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer.

Here are some X-ray machines and their properties:

1. Fluoro OEC 9600 X-Ray
The GE OEC 9600 C-Arm is a mobile X-ray system that combines an improved fluorescence image and the ability to record X-rays on the film. The OEC 9600 can be used in various diagnostic and surgical applications.
