ELOS Technology Mechanism of Action

Intrinsic and particularly extrinsic aging processes are both responsible for the numerous visible signs of skin aging, which can be characterized by the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, skin laxity, uneven skin texture, solar lentigines, dyspigmentation, and increased pore size, among other cutaneous signs. Many of these cutaneous manifestations are due to a steady decrease in the production of collagen and elastic fibers as well as architectural changes in the collagen fiber network, which results in thinning of the dermis as time progresses.

Ablative and non-ablative skin resurfacing approaches including lasers, intense pulse light (IPL) and radiofrequency-based devices, used alone or in combination, are currently being employed for skin rejuvenation and the improvement of the signs of skin aging, albeit with varying degrees of efficacy, downtime and tolerability. Treatments are aimed at achieving a better-organized and newer dermal matrix and epidermal normalization, leading to a smoother, vibrant, and more youthful appearance of the skin.

The generated heat lowers the impedance at the target, creating a preferred pathway for the flow of the chromophore-independent bipolar radiofrequency energy. The RF energy then further increases the heat in the target area, creating a vortex of energy in and around the target, resulting in more thermal impact in the target tissue. Both the optical and RF energies are applied almost simultaneously for a safer and more efficient treatment. In addition, the integrated contact cooling, delivered by the various treatment hand-pieces, precools the targeted skin, increasing the impedance of the epidermis and, thereby, forcing the RF energy deeper into the dermis, resulting in enhanced protection and patient comfort.
